Arrowmen Promote Cub Scouting at W-3B Conclave
By Ross Armstrong, 2005 Western Region Chief
As Arrowmen, we are constantly called to serve both Scouting and our communities. One way for us to serve is to remember our little brothers in blue. That's right, Cub Scouts. For many, Cub Scouts is their first experience with Scouting. As members of the OA we should recognize the investment in Scouting we can make by helping Cub Scouts in our area. Recently, Section W-3B arose to the challenge and with help from the Redwood Empire Council in Santa Rosa, California was able to incorporate Cub Scouts in the Conclave. The conclave took place in Santa Rosa, California at a private day school. Local Packs came out and set up booths and youth from the local area were invited to check out the Scouting program. The council set up activities like archery, BB shooting, a pinewood derby track, and an appearance by the Tiger Cub mascot. The cubs in attendance were able to see the exciting activities of the conclave and even go head to head against Arrowmen at the pinewood derby. In addition to registering 50 new Cub Scouts, the school where the conclave was held started a Cub Scout Pack. The conclave was an excellent example of how as members of the OA we can help serve Cub Scouts.
In addition to incorporating Cub Scouts into section events, lodges can give additional support by performing Arrow of Light and Crossover ceremonies. Lastly, the OA's support of council Cub Scout activities not only fulfills our purpose of camping promotion but is an optional requirement for Quality Lodge. Above all, remember that our little brothers in blue today are very likely to be OA brothers in the future.
