NOAC Website Honor Award

Three West Lodges Recognized for Superior Websites
From NOAC 2009 Live

Honor Site LogoSixty-four web sites were entered into the 2009 NOAC Lodge Web Site Competition. Results of the competition were released at Founders Day.

It is clear that most of the lodges that entered the competition are effectively using the Web to communicate with their members. The judges were impressed by the high quality of the lodge sites. The National Web Site Staff encourages all lodges to use the Internet to effectively communicate with their members.

Of the elite 12 lodges that were chosen as NOAC 2009 Honor Sites, the following lodges from the Western Region were chosen:

Talako Lodge, Marin Council, #35 www.talako.org

Ta Tanka Lodge, San Gabriel Valley Council, #40 www.tatankalodge.org

Distinguished Service Award

DSA RibbonThe Distinguished Service Award (DSA) was created in 1940 to honor Order of the Arrow members, youth and adults, who have rendered distinguished and outstanding service to the Order on a sectional, regional, or national basis. The award is presented at National Order of the Arrow Conferences. Since 1940 only 965 persons, including the 2015 Class of 57 recipients, have been selected to receive the Distinguished Service Award.

The award is a sterling silver arrowhead, bearing an arrow pointing upward and to the wearer's right, suspended from a white neck-ribbon upon which are embroidered red arrows. A white square knot embroidered upon red cloth is also available. Presentation of the award is limited; nominations are open to both youth and adult.

National Service Award

National Service Award PlaqueThe National Service Award was established in 1999 to recognize lodges in each region that have performed outstanding service, both in a qualitative and a quantitative sense, to their council. The National Service Award Petition is submitted along with the lodge recharter application. To be considered for the National Service Award, a lodge must be certified as a National Quality Lodge the year in which the National Service Award Petition is submitted. Two lodges per region will be granted National Service Award each year.

The National Service Award petition requires lodges to submit information on current lodge membership (the size of a lodge is a factor when considering the magnitude of the service it has provided), a detailed description of the largest and most meaningful service project the lodge has completed for its council, and a record of all service performed by the lodge for the council since the last recharter process. Service for this award is defined as any project that has directly benefited the Scouting program in the council. View petition form.

National Service Grant

For the past several years, the National Order of the Arrow Committee has provided matching service grants for a limited number of projects submitted by application to the national OA office. A total of $40,000 was made available for distribution for projects around the country. The evaluators considered the innovative scope and design of the project, how the project impacts a significant number of Scouts, and how the project enhances Cub Scouting or Boy Scouting in the council. View Service Grant petition forms.

Congratuations to the six Western Region lodges that have been selected as service grant recipients for 2014:

  • The Catalina Council (Papago Lodge) headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, will be awarded $2,165 dollars to construct a new audio-visual system for Camp Elmore.
  • The Great Salt Lake Council (El-Ku-Ta Lodge) headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, will receive $4,000 dollars to remodel the “Fort Area” structure at Camp Tracy.
  • The Western Colorado Council (Mic-O-Say Lodge) headquartered in Grand Junction, Colorado, will receive $3,250 dollars to construct an amphitheater at Camp We Can.

The National Order of the Arrow Committee expresses its appreciation to many lodges who applied for the 2014 service grants. To learn more visit the National Page about the Service Grants.

E. Urner Goodman Camping Award

E. Urner Goodman Camping Award Plaque

The award was established in 1969 as a tribute and testimonial to the Order's founder, E. Urner Goodman. Its purpose is to encourage and challenge Order of the Arrow members and lodges to increase their effectiveness in promoting and increasing Scout camping in each council. Awards are presented to two outstanding lodges in each region annually. For a lodge to be eligible for consideration, the E. Urner Goodman Camping Award petition should be completed and forwarded with the lodge's charter renewal application. View petition form.
