Region Profile
The Western Region consists of 13 sections throughout the Western United States,
Hawaii Alaska, and Japan. Each section typically consists of between 2 and 8
lodges and is led by a Section Chief, who is advised by a Section Adviser and
Section Staff Adviser. The Key 3 leadership for the region consists of the youth
leader, the Region Chief, who is advised by the Region Chairman and the Region
Staff Adviser. The Region Chief is a national officer in the Order of the Arrow,
Boy Scouts of America and is elected by the Section Chiefs of the region at
the National OA Planning Meeting every December.
The Region is responsible for several things, and its most notable events are
the National Leadership Seminars and National Lodge Adviser Training Seminars.
For more information on events in the Western Region, check out the Region Calendar.
Updated Western Region Chief's goals coming soon
2007 Western Region Chief's Goals
- Utilizing the Western Region National Events and Promotions Committee, achieve 100% Key 3 attendance at the 2007 National Conservation & Leadership Summit (NCLS).
- Develop training syllabi that Section Chiefs can use to improve their Section Council of Chiefs and their Conclave leadership team.
- Send more Arrowmen through the three Order of the Arrow High Adventure programs than we sent in 2006.
- Keep the Western Region website updated and accurate.
- Publish electronic editions of the "Mustang" newsletter quarterly.
- Promote the use of the 2007 Quality Lodge Assistance Planbook to increase the number of lodges that achieve Quality Lodge status from 2006.
- Develop a 2008 Quality Lodge Assistance Planbook for release in late December 2007.
- Host an amazing Western Region Gathering at the 2007 NCLS that not only excites Arrowmen about service but inspires them to take what they learn at the Summit back to their councils for implementation.
- Establish the foundation and parameters for a Western Region Travel Fund that would partially support NLS Trainers fiscally in the future in order to secure the best trainers at all of our National Leadership Seminars, regardless of their location.
- Call every Section Chief at least once a month.
- Add and constantly update a "Where in the World is the Western Region Chief" section to the Western Region website, where anyone can read mini-blogs of my experiences and view pictures of my travels after I return from each event.
- Continue the tradition of posting a "Question of the Month" every month for the Section Chiefs.
- Emerge as the 2007 NCLS Interregionalinic Dodgeball Competition Victor when I battle T. Alex Gomez, the 2007 Southern Region Chief, in our pre-arranged Sudden Death Dodgeball Face-Off.
- Continue writing a strong, open-ended legacy in the history book of our Order that I will be proud to hand over to the next Western Region Chief, so he can continue to write the West’s legacy throughout 2008.
Purpose of the Order of the Arrow
To recognize those campers--Scouts and Scouters--who best exemplify the Scout
Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recognition cause other campers
to conduct themselves in such a manner as to warrant recognition.
To develop and maintain camping tradition and spirit.
To promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part
of the units camping program, both year-round and in the summer camp, as directed
by the camping committee of the council.
To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership
in cheerful service to others.
Mission of the OA Lodge
To achieve the purpose of the Order of the Arrow as an integral part of the
Boy Scouts of America in the council through positive youth leadership under
the guidance of selected capable adults.
